Things to do on Kelleys Island
Kelleys Island is a peaceful getaway nestled in the western basin of Lake Erie. With just over 300 year-round residents, the island has preserved its laid-back, welcoming vibe, making it a great spot for a relaxing, slow-paced vacation. Stretching across roughly 12 miles of shoreline, the island’s limestone-rich landscape provides a wonderful place for families to come together and explore in nature.
For those looking to venture beyond the island, Kelleys offers easy access to several nearby Lake Erie islands. A short ferry ride or boater trip brings you the shores of Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island, known for its lively entertainment, historic sites, and waterfront dining, or the quieter Middle Bass Island for more low-key exploring.
Even without leaving Kelleys, there’s plenty to enjoy: Take the golf cart or bike around to discover the island’s historic sites, visit local wineries, and grab a bite downtown. You can hike the North Shore Loop Trail, visit the famous Glacial Grooves carved by ancient glaciers, and even try your hand at fishing or boating on the lake. The variety of activities, from nature exploration to water recreation, makes Kelleys Island a perfect spot for both quiet relaxation and low-key adventure.

1. Glacial Grooves State Memorial
Walk along boardwalks to see the massive glacial grooves carved into the limestone — a geological wonder.
There are interpretive signs so you can learn how glaciers helped shape the landscape.

8. Mini Golf & Golf Cart Rentals
Visit Caddy Shack Square for 18-hole putt-putt, arcade games, and golf carts.
9. Dining & Drinks
The Village Pump is an island institution. We suggest trying their Lake Erie perch or a Brandy Alexander. Dockers Waterfront Restaurant: lakeside dining with views. West Bay Bar: especially magical at sunset, with live music, lawn games, and a “dock-and-dine” option if you arrive by boat.
10. Nature & Wildlife
Birding opportunities are excellent, thanks to the island’s preserves and trails. Go fossil rubbing: there are fossils exposed around some of the rocky areas. Stargazing: because the island is less developed, night skies can be especially clear.
11. Relax & Unwind
Hit the public beaches to swim, soak up sun, or skip rocks. Pack a picnic for one of the scenic spots, like the State Park or preserve areas.
Take a mellow bike ride or drive around on a golf cart to soak in quiet island roads and lake views.
12. Check out Kelly’s Island Chamber of Commerce for the Island Events scheduled each year.
